Adaptive Task Allocation Inspired by a Model of Division of Labor in Social Insects

چکیده
Social insects provide us with a powerful metaphor to create decentralized systems of simple interacting, and often mobile, agents. The emergent collective intelligence of social insects – swarm intelligence – resides not in complex individual abilities but rather in networks of interactions that exist among individuals and between individuals and their environment. In particular, a recently proposed model of division of labor in a colony of primitively eusocial wasps, based on a simple reinforcement of response thresholds, can be transformed into a decentralized adaptive algorithm of task allocation. An application of such an algorithm i s proposed in the context of a mail company, but virtually any type of flexible task allocation can be described within the same framework.

Adaptive Division of Labor in Multi-Robot System with Minimum Task Switching
In many multi-robot systems, various tasks are allocated dynamically to an individual robot and each robot should decide its own work that is the best commensurate with its current state. To solve complex task allocation problems, agentbased approaches based on the model of division of labor of many social insects have gained increasing attentions in recent years. In this paper, we consider the...
متن کاملeXtreme-Ants: Ant Based Algorithm for Task Allocation in Extreme Teams
This paper addresses the problem of multiagent task allocation in extreme teams. An extreme team is composed by a large number of agents with overlapping functionality operating in dynamic environments with possible inter-task constraints. We present an approximate algorithm for task allocation in extreme teams, called eXtreme-Ants. The algorithm is inspired in the division of labor in social i...
متن کاملSpecialization Does Not Predict Individual Efficiency in an Ant
The ecological success of social insects is often attributed to an increase in efficiency achieved through division of labor between workers in a colony. Much research has therefore focused on the mechanism by which a division of labor is implemented, i.e., on how tasks are allocated to workers. However, the important assumption that specialists are indeed more efficient at their work than gene...
متن کاملDivision of Labor in Particle Swarm Optimisation
We introduce Division of Labor (DoL) from social insects to improve local optimisation of the Particle Swarm Optimiser (PSO). We compared the performance with the basic PSO, a GA and simulated annealing and found improvements around local optima. The PSO with DoL outperforms the basic PSO on most testcases and is comparable in local op-
متن کاملMortality rates and division of labor in the leaf-cutting ant, Atta colombica
Division of labor in social groups is affected by the relative costs and benefits of conducting different tasks. However, most studies have examined the dynamics of division of labor, rather than the costs and benefits that presumably underlie the evolution of such systems. In social insects, division of labor may be simplistically described as a source-sink system, with external tasks, such as...
